The 1983 “Just Say Say No” Campaign & D.A.R.E Program
3D Poster

After looking at the major events that occurred in the United States during a chosen year, 1983 in this case, a 3D poster was developed to represent a visual narrative of one key event. The event chosen for this project was Nancy Regan’s 1983 “Just Say No” campaign during the “War on Drugs” that began during Regan’s presidency.

The 3D poster has the words “YES” and “NO” jumbled together with the history of the D.A.R.E program and the “Just Say No” campaign. This was to show how it was a political failure and that there were no statistically significant differences between treatment and control group participants in drug use, attitudes toward drug use, or self-esteem. So the idea was that while the goal was to get children to say “no” to drugs, the reverse was the result. The poster consisted of laser cut elements to build the structural components overlaid with the informational poster that morphed with the 3D elements.

Key Project Elements

The narrative was intentionally obstructed both by the construction of the poster and the text colors used to mimic the way the science and negative results of the studies were hidden by the political leaders at the time.
